Kason Sugioka was born in Yoshino District Shimokita Village in 1913. After graduating from Nara Normal School, Mr. Sugioka studied under Shiyuu Tsujimoto, Saishuu Onoue, and Gohou Hibino.
After teaching at Nara Prefectural High School for Women, he went on to teach calligraphy at Osaka Kyoiku University. It was at this time that he studied Heian period literature, the history of Chinese literature, and esthetics at Kyoto University, and also when he received the guidance of Shin'ichi Hisamatsu in the idea of Zen art.
As a calligrapher, Mr. Sugioka's works appeared in many exhibitions, mostly in the Nitten, an exhibition organized by Japan's most popular art organization, as well as the Asahi Modern Calligraphy 20 Artists Exhibition, the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition, and the Yomiuri Calligraphy Exhibition. He continued to pursue the greatest beauty in Kana calligraphy since the Heian period.
