Museum Overview
The Nara City Museum of Photographic Fine Arts was opened on April 4, 1992. Nara's photographer, Taikichi Irie, who had taken photographs of Nara and other areas in Yamato for nearly half a century, donated his entire collection to the city.
This gave the impetus for the creation of the Museum. It offers residents and non-residents the opportunity to appreciate the photography of Irie and others. The city of Nara embodies an historical legacy from long, long ago. The Museum's aim is to be one of the centers for expressing the rich personality of the citizens of Nara, who have inherited this legacy.
This is the first photography museum in Western Japan, and we hope you will find the time you spend here inspiring and tranquil.
